TIFF 2006
Your day is gone when you wake up at 6pm.

I went to four screenings at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.
I saw one horror, one romance, one documentary and one martial arts epic tale.

Each year, I end up going to a few screenings, but by far, this was the best year in terms of films I attended. I got to see four of my five top choices (The one I missed was D.O.A.P. - Death of a President. It was extremely hard to get tickets for, considering the subject matter, which was George W. Bush's assassination).

The stand-out film for me was ...So Goes the Nation, a documentary on the election campaign between Kerry and Bush in 2004. It concentrated on Ohio and the moves each party made to back their candidate. The interviews they had with people from each campaign were great - insightful, interesting, absolutely hilarious. They spoke of how Kerry could have had the majority in Ohio, had his campaign had one decisive message and not 15. One of his promos showed 10 pictures of Kerry, saying something along the lines of "He's a hockey player, he's a windsurfer, he likes McDonald's, etc." and the audience in the theatre is watching it and laughing, because, who cares? However, it also showed a lot of people backing Kerry because they just wanted Bush out of office, but none of these people really even bothered to see what Kerry was about.

It was a bit funny when I went into work the next day. We were sitting in an edit suite and I began talking about the next US elections. One man thought the Republicans would win, one thought the Democrats would win, one started going off about the atrocities of war, and the other said no matter who wins, the war will keep on going because that's the way it's been, that's the way it will be. It was an hour of debate with no conclusive answer, but there was the sharing of ideas.

Bryan said I was a bit of a trouble-maker because I started the debate, but I argued that in our environment, where the majority of people talk about which star is dating whom, it was good to actually have people debating on more than the colour of Joshua Jackson's hair.
